RAW RECIPE CORNER from Frank Giglio
Courtesy of Frank, who will be joining us for this October/November.
Positions are available to apprentice in the kitchen for the four week Level I YTT (more info in the newsletter).
A hydrophilic seed, chia can absorb up to 10x the amount of water, making it quite hydrating when consumed. By soaking chia in water or milk, it bulks up to a gel like consistency. The gelling is nourishing to the intestines and provides a smooth and easy to digest meal. As a complete protein, chia is great for those limiting animal food intake as it contains all the essential amino acids. Chia also has a ratio of Omega 6-3 making it a staple fat source without the worry of rancidity.
A true endurance food, chia was used by soldiers as well as long distance runners as the main source of fuel. Native to South America, chia was a superfood to the Aztec people. Chia has become a staple in my dietary lifestyle.
Chia Pudding
2 cups spring water
1.25 cups Brazil nuts, soaked overnight in 2.5 cups spring water, strained, rinsed well
1/4 cup chia seeds
1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder
2 teaspoons maca root powder
2 cordyceps capsules
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon mesquite meal
pinch of salt
Sweetener of choice (stevia, honey, maple syrup)
1/2 cup blueberries
1 Tablespoon bee pollen
Blend water and 1 cup of Brazil nuts until smooth and creamy. Strain milk through a stainless steel strainer and set aside. Add the chia seeds to a bowl and add half of the milk. Stir in the remaining ingredients with the exception of the berries, bee pollen and extra Brazil nuts. Sweeten to taste and allow mixture to gel for 10 minutes. If mixture becomes too thick, stir in more nut milk. Once chia gels and absorbs the milk, pour into your favorite bowl and top with the berries, bee pollen and reserved nuts. Enjoy!

Radiantly Alive September 2010 Newsletter
There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.
Douglas H. Everett
Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. Soren Kierkegaard
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.
Philip K. Dick
After years of pursuing a 'safe' academic path toward becoming a lawyer, I decided to change majors, and instead focus my college studies on Philosophy, Religion and English. My mother was not the only one to ask me (repeatedly) 'what kind of job are you going to get with that degree?' I didn't know. I just knew that studying what was most interesting to me was the only path that made sense to me.
I thought of Soren Kierkegaard recently when I watched the movie Doubt. He proposed, in the early/mid 19th century, that the one main question worth everyone considering, is "how should I live?"

"Yoga As Art" - Level II 500 hour Module, Nov 12-26
Perhaps the greatest art project any of us create in our lives, is our life itself. When asked what message he would give to the world, Gandhi responded ‘my life is my message.’
In The Tree Of Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar writes that “if as an artist you also practice yoga – if you are in touch with the internal levels of your being – you will develop a vast range of expression and your art will become what is known as ‘satyam, sivam, sundaram’, true, auspicious and beautiful. Art then becomes divine.”

In his brilliant essays in The Dance Of Siva, the philosopher Ananda K. Coomaraswamy makes the exciting claim that the experiencing of beauty is the same as that of religious experience – that “we are justified in identifying beauty with Brahman -–and that in this experience, the distinction between individual and Brahman is transcended.” If this is so, artists who study yoga as Mr. Iyengar suggests, will be making art that uses Beauty as a way for their public to actively engage with Brahman.
The Yoga as Art Level II module will explore a range of yogic practices, exercise, philosophies and studies specifically designed to deepen the trainees overall experience of and teaching of yoga, and directly in relationship to yoga as art.
We've created our Level II Modules specifically for those of us for whom yoga is already a part of life. Our modules intelligently synthesize a blend of potent compounds - master teachers, focused and effective teaching/learning environment, organic living foods and spiritual Bali - to create a magical gestalt of experience. Any three of the modules can be combined for 500 hour Certification, and each stands as a stand alone experience.
NEW! We've just uploaded our new video that provides a glimpse into the Level II experience. Special thanks to Oksana, recent Vibrant Living Yoga Teacher Training graduate, for her passion and creative work in heading this project.

Launch of the Radiantly Alive Raw Chef Apprenticeship Program - October 10 - Nov 7, 2010
We are thrilled to announce the evolution and expansion of our yoga teacher trainings...the Radiantly Alive Raw Chef Apprenticeship Program. For five years, we've been working with the top raw chefs in the world to create amazing food for our high vibe yoga teacher trainings. Now, a few aspiring raw food apprentices have the opportunity to study and work with Radiantly Alive and our world-renowned chefs here in tropical Bali.
Combining the best of many elements - skilled senior chefs, the practical and rewarding experience of preparing food for yogis, the opportunity to participate in portions of our yoga training, a dynamic and enthusiastic educational staff guiding the apprentices, plentiful and incredible all-organic local fruits, vegetables and superfoods (coconuts, cacao, cashews and more) - and all set in the beauty of spiritual Bali - we now take the apprenticeship program to another level.
We've included a dedicated mentor (Boris Lauser), who will guide the apprentices' education through a mixture of practical and classroom experience, along with the featured chef for the training. The curriculum features topics such as raw food preparation, nutrition, kitchen technique, superfoods, cleansing/fasting, personalized nutrition, kitchen management, catering for retreats and more.
Spaces are available for the upcoming Apprenticeship Program. To meet Boris, check out his video here. For more information and an application, visit our site or contact us at ytt@radiantlyalive.com.

And... How Should I Live Life?
Soren Kierkegaard wrestled with the directions and claims of Christianity as put forth by the church in those days. His book Either Or claimed that it wasn't possible to live according to Christian ideals and live 'in the world.' Some interpreted him as bleak. Certainly the church was not a fan.
For his part, though, Kierkegaard did evolve to a key philosophy that might have puzzled his more dogmatic critics. Though he severely criticizes Christianity, he concludes that the way to live life best is through what he called 'a leap of faith.' Though the existence of God is not verifiable, the best way to live is to act as if we believe in God, or act as a person would if they were in love.
One could take his premise further. For any of us, our own happiness, our comfort with ourself, is dependent on our ability to not know. Or, more accurately, to admit we don't know. The truth of life is that we never really know what's going to happen. We definitely don't know what's really going on with other people, and seldom truly fully know what processes are at work within ourselves.
Many of us struggle with ourselves because of our conflicting parts. Every spiritual tradition has some form of calling for the evolutionary necessity of developing the ability to live with paradox. We live in a world that has greed, isolation, hate and violence. And… we can create love, beauty, truth, caring and community. There are parts of each of us that are petty, resentful and mean. And…we all are generous, loving, and accepting.
Danger comes when we deny the dark sides of ourselves for fear of it negating the light sides. We are both. Where Kierkegaard seemed to claim that Christianity is outdated, he eventually concludes that the best way to live is as Jesus did. The question for any of us is how do we create the life that is meaningful and satisfying according to our own definitions.
Setting aside the mythical and fantastical images of Jesus that come down to us through some channels, the evidence suggests (the gospels being a big part of the evidence) that he was himself complicated. While he showed us the epitome of love, he was also capable of anger and frustration.
The bottom line is we are all composed of many parts. Additionally, objective knowing is impossible. So, in a world of doubt, we can choose to live by ‘either or’ mentality, which yields consequences that we might find less than appealing (war, psychological division, etc). We also can choose ‘and,’ which - though more complicated - leads to a greater ease and comfort with the real paradoxes of the world and our own inner workings.
I translate Kierkegaard’s advice: though we cannot know, though we live in a world of doubt, let’s act as if indeed existence were guided by a beneficent force. Let’s act as if Jesus were real, as if we could actually live up to the ideal that he proposed. I’m a pragmatist - I ask ‘what works?’ What leads us to the results we want?
