GLOBAL MALA September 19, Ubud, Bali

Organized by Daphne Tse, who worked closely with Shiva Rea in Los Angeles in creating and producing the original Global Mala peace event in 2007, Daphne is excited to help produce the Bali event and promote the coming together as a global yoga community to honor UN International Day of Peace. Over 300 events this year will be held to support the Global Mala and Yoga Month worldwide. Daniel will join 17 other yoga teachers from around Bali in leading 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar and gather together to promote Peace through the practice of yoga. Each teacher will lead a series of sun salutes in their own style, and live music with local and international musicians will accompany some of the teachers. The event will take place at The Yoga Barn in Ubud on Saturday, September 19th from 8am until 11am.

Recipe Corner: Italian Bruschetta

A delicious way to use the leftover pulp from juicing. Don't be fooled by the relative simplicity of this recipe - these were a huge hit at the last Teacher Training. Perfect topped with pesto, tapenade, or used as sanwich bread. By Simone Powers!

2 cups pulsed, soaked almonds
1 cup vegetable pulp (beets, carrot)
1/3 cup flax meal
Fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, etc)
Garlic (optional)
1 tsp salt
½ cup water

Rinse and drain almonds, and pulse in a food processor until finely chopped. Mix in the rest of the ingredients by hand. Form into bruschetta “slices”, and dehydrate at 118 degrees until crisp.

Radiantly Alive September 2009 Newsletter

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."— Winston Churchill

...perhaps there is a pattern set up in the heavens for one who desires to see it, and having seen it, to find one in himself. - Plato

I’m at my desk, back in Bali, after a whirlwind tour of North America. My first time there in 5 years, and my daughter Zaida’s first time ever (she’s two and a half years old). Her single comment about New York City: ‘It’s loud.’

I was recently interviewed by Laura Bruno, author and raw food enthusiast - below are excerpts from our conversation. What a fun opportunity to remind myself of my viewpoints of certain things and give me the chance to review my own life and endeavors – which brought a lot of gratitude for the life I’m leading.

This morning while I practiced yoga I listened to Marianne Williamson, who offered an analogy so obvious and pithy I’m amazed to have just heard it for the first time. She was reminding us of how all that we experience in life comes from within. To attempt to change anything in our lives without that awareness is like going up to a movie screen at the cinema and trying to change the plot. Good news, eh? If we’ve lost the plot, we’re the writers… and we have full license to script our lives however we like.

In love and service,
Daniel Aaron

January Retreat: A New Year, and more Vibrant You!
Can you think of an amazing way to start the new year? You don't have to - we already did! Retreats are one of our favorite events, and we're particularly excited about this one - because it's been since November 2008 since our last one, and because Paul Toliuszis will be co-facilitating the six day event, this January 25 - 30, 2010.

A longtime yoga teacher from Miami Beach, Florida, Paul owns the Miami Yogashala and the creator of South Beach Power Yoga. During the past 18 years of practice, he's founded 2 Yoga Alliance Registered Schools, conducted 26 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Trainings, and helped hundreds of people become professional teachers in the global yoga community.

Immerse yourself in six days of revitalization and breathing life into your intention for a vibrant 2010: find inspiration and strength with incredible yoga with Daniel and Paul, nourish and treat yourself with gourmet all organic Living Foods cheffed by Simone Powers, and journey into the magic of Bali. All based in the lovely and luxurious Anahata Resort, we'll relax, replenish and reinvigorate ourselves in the tropical paradise of Ubud.

Twenty Questions with Daniel Aaron...
In lieu of Daniel's usual column, we're posting excerpts from his recent interview with Laura Bruno, to provide glimpses and insights into his varied and eclectic background. Laura's the author of The Lazy Raw Foodist's Guide and Schizandra and the Gates of Mu (the world's first raw cacao-yoga-astrology-novel) - the two were introduced by Shazzie, who quickly noted their similar passions, and interest in Schizandra (it's Daniel's daughter's middle name!). The full interview can be found on her blog.

LB: Please share a little bit about Bali. How and why did you come to live there?
DA: (Excerpt) Just before Bali, I’d been living in Hawaii, asking myself, asking my friends, seeking the next phase in my life, the perfect place to relocate to. I remember I was in the middle of a noni juice fast, and my friend Miracle Jay said ‘why don’t you go to Ubud’? It was a landmark moment for me – immediately I felt a tingle run from head to foot, and I knew my direction had been set.

LB: I love that you’re so diverse! Astrology, yoga, fiction, raw food … you obviously have many interests. How did you begin to “find your path” and what gave you the courage to pursue multiple career trajectories at the same time?
DA: (Excerpt) For as long as I can remember I bucked the common advice of practicality (in some ways) by pursing what was most interesting to me regardless of whether it apparently led to a job, career or income.....after life shook me up and set me onto a spiritual ‘path’ of growth and discovery, I became a ‘training’ junkie, reveling in the depth of learning that these new (to me) forms of education provided....my life became a roving romp into a kind of learning that I previously hadn’t imagined.

LB: What do you consider the key reasons someone would want to find a yoga instructor? What qualities should they look for in their search?
DA: (Excerpt) It’s an exciting time for those of us passionate about sharing yoga; the popularity of – and really the global need for – yoga keeps rising. Even in the last 15 years that I’ve been immersed in it, popularity of yoga has continued to exponentially rise – and I think this is a reflection of the shift of the global culture – that so many of us are beginning to wake up, to realize that the potential for us to truly experience the life we wish to create is so possible, so close. That who we REALLY are, what we are REALLY capable of, is actually far beyond what society has presented, to all of us, as normal. Most people find yoga as a way to either to move away from some sort of pain, or to move toward some form of enhanced living. People find yoga to relieve stress, get more flexible, because it’s become trendy… or find enlightenment. And often regardless of their initial interest, they find more and different components as their involvement continues to feed them.

LB: What sort of Astrology services do you offer? For someone who has never explored this area, what benefits might he or she expect from a reading?
DA: (Excerpt) My main interest and specialty with astrology is looking into people’s evolutionary path – meaning, exploring the biggest reason for them being here. Once we’re more clear on what our soul wants for our learning and growth in life, many of the other important and pressing matters – work, love, health – fall more easily into place. I love astrology’s natural complexity, its ability to illuminate so many different parts of ourselves and to help us balance, harmonize and optimize those components into ever more radiant lives.

LB: Raw food diets are so diverse, and some Eastern philosophies really emphasize cooking foods. As a yoga teacher and for you personally, what tips can you share for balancing raw foods and yoga?
DA: (Excerpt) I’ve grown into the understanding that eating living foods can work beautifully for everyone, if we approach it intelligently and find what is right for us individually. This is one of the greatest teachings of many of the Eastern medical systems – in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda: that we are all unique, and have specific dietary (and lifestyle) needs that will keep us in balance and healthy. We can call it biochemical individuality.

LB: What sort of retreats do you offer?
DA: (Excerpt) Our retreats vary in length and intensity. They almost all include Vibrant Living Yoga classes. All of our residential retreats include gourmet, organic living foods. We like to be in amazing beautiful places, so often our retreats take advantage of that with excursions into the nature and culture of those places, whether in Bali or elsewhere. Because I love creating experiences for people together with great teachers and presenters, and because collobating is both more fun for us and creates powerful events, we include amazing people on our ‘faculty’ from all over the world. Yoga teachers, nutrition gurus, musicians, body workers and healers. The more I respond to that question, the more grateful I become. It’s a truly divine life where I get to play with such phenomenal people in the creation of our maximum delight in life.
