Radiantly Alive March 2010 Newsletter
“Imagination
is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will
what you imagine and at last you create what you will..”- George Bernard Shaw
"Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion." - Hebbel
In the spirit of a newsletter containing news, here's some of ours: we're opening a yoga studio and wellness center here in Ubud, Bali! While the idea of it has been percolating for some time now, the synchronicity of the opportunity came just as I finished reading the classic business book Good to Great by Jim Collins. Collins gives clear criteria for how to measure the merit of any new project
-and for those of us who seek to overcome mediocrity and create
greatness in our life projects, this information is particularly
inspiring.
Indeed his book has been helpful as we delightedly and elatedly (not to mention busily) dive into the creation of our Ubud studio. And for those wishing to help found the studio, we've set up some value-rich packages including studio memberships and deep discounts on our trainings, retreats and products - contact us and we'll send you more information.
While Collins' book is highlighted as a business book, the insights are
spiritual in nature, and applicable to any endeavor. And combining
the principles he outlines (see below) with our genuine desire to serve
and uplift our world produces a perfect recipe for success and
authentic happiness in our lives.
More ideas and radical tips for managing time below.

| Vibrant Living Yoga Teacher Training: May 10 - June 7, 2010 |
Five years ago, we had a vision to create a yoga teacher training unlike any other
- an opportunity for all students, regardless of their previous yoga
experience, to learn about the fundamentals and dive into modern
styles, all led by the world's experts and yoga masters; to invite
students to leave behind their routine and structure with our
residential program set in Bali, where spiritual pursuits infuse
everyday life; to nourish mind, soul and body, with high-vibe, organic
and decadent living foods catered by our Radiantly Alive kitchen team;
to connect with and be supported by a student community, from all over
the world. All this succeeded, and more.
It's a teacher training, and a lifestyle training. It's an immersion
into the deepest experience that we could create in four weeks, of what
yoga is. Our trainees get an incredible yoga education,
with cutting edge learning and teaching techniques that empower those
who wish to begin - or further - teaching yoga. Equally, it's a
perfect fit for those with courage and commitment, who wish to dive
into a month of challenge, fun, friendship and health; who want to
spend a glorious month in Bali; who want to grow and learn, about yoga
and about themselves. People emerge more enthused and
enlivened; they have not only a broader and deeper outlook, they have
the means to continue with their momentum and grow.

| The Art of Stress-Free Productivity |
Those
of us actively engaged in our world - creating, seeking, learning -
find that opportunities arise frequently. Yet to act on all of them
isn’t necessarily the best pathway to health and happiness, for
ourselves, our families or our communities. How to choose? In his book,
Collins elucidates the principles that underlie ‘greatness’ in any
field.
To be fair, ‘greatness’ is not necessarily
everyone’s goal. For those who are content with ‘good’ or ‘mediocre’,
achieving more than what’s been presented or easily in our grasp is not
important. Some of us, however, strive to realize our potential. And
while we’d all do well to develop what in yoga terminology is called
Santosha – contentment, a general satisfaction with how things are – keeping
part of ourselves engaged in consistently moving toward what we know we
are capable of is not only satisfying, it’s the only way of being that
‘feels right.’
How many of us have
excitedly agreed to new ventures, partnerships, projects, family
events, community endeavors and then found we lacked the time,
resources or energy to do them all justice? So often it seems that
especially when we’re doing well, when we’re succeeding, opportunities
come in droves. However, saying yes to everything is a recipe for results other than success and integrity. We do well to buffer our enthusiasm with wisdom; some opportunities must be sublimated, postponed or given up.
Jim Collins
suggests the following as guidelines to determine whether to proceed
with a particular opportunity. If the answers to the following three
questions are yes, then it’s full steam ahead. If not, can the
situation be changed to get to these to a yes? If not, our best course
will be to wait or create other opportunities.
1. Does the project fit into what we are deeply passionate about?
2. Could we be the best in the world at it?
3. Will it be sustainable, financially and energetically?
1. Does the project fit into what we are deeply passionate about? While
number one – passion – seems fairly obvious on the surface, more common
than not, people are living lives filled with projects, particularly
work, that are less than meaningful to them. Just as ‘good’ is the
enemy of great, acceptance of a lack of meaning in our endeavors is the
biggest obstacle to living with passion. On the flip side, simply
knowing that it’s possible to wake each day, excited and enthused about
what we get to do, opens the door. Discovering what we care about – and then dedicating ourselves to live on that path – is the first essential ingredient.
2. Could we be the best in the world at it?
We may not even be close to being the best in the world at something
when the idea of it first arrives. We may require training, education.
We might need to cultivate skills. And, truthfully, we may not even
ever become the best at it. Even the idea of being able to measure who
is ‘best’ at something is inherently flawed. Yet, possession
of the belief that we could create something, offer something – a
service, a product, an idea – in a unique and powerful way, that we
could surpass what’s been offered up until now, not only enlivens us
with energy, it’s a driving force in creating greatness.
Remember the question is what could we be the best in the world at. Not
what are we the best at. The philosophy behind this question ties in
well with today’s positive psychology movement, and the simple asking
of the question moves us toward greater satisfaction in our lives.
3. Will it be sustainable, financially and energetically?
For some the third question may smack of self-centeredness, or even
greed -- Collins writes it out as ‘what drives your economic engine’ --
yet, upon deeper reflection, just the opposite is the case. Especially
if we add another element absent in Collins’ work, that true greatness
comes when we are also aligned with dedication to service, to doing
‘good’ for others, economic sustainability is essential in that without it, the ‘good’ we can do will be short lived. Just
as the well-intentioned social worker soon burns out without learning
how to take care of themselves and ultimately short circuits their own
motivation, an essential component of greatness is longevity.
I meditated on these questions extensively myself in recent days
- in the context of the new yoga studio and in other realms. Realizing
the efficacy of this recipe, I felt (and feel) elated knowing that I
can shout yes to all three, and so we’re flying forward in our
creation. I hope that you’ll also benefit – both from the studio and
from considering these three questions in your own life. The more we
all live with passion and create greatness, the brighter the world we
create every day. |
