RAW RECIPE: MINERALIZED NO BAKE BROWNIES (from Frank)

I love chocolate! So, when I am feeling the need for a fix, this recipe does the trick, and is made with ease.

I enjoy using this recipe because it does not require the use of heat to melt down the chocolate paste. Simply start by chopping the cacao into small pieces. All ingredients will go into the food processor before it is shaped on a wooden surface. Once you are done molding the brownies, allow them to set in the fridge for 15 minutes. These do not need to be refrigerated.

7 ounces Arriba Cacao paste, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup coconut creme/butter (I love the butter from Sacred Chocolate)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder
2 Tablespoons mesquite powder
1/4 cup Frank’s Finest, LLC Decadent Dessert Spice
1 Tablespoon macuna (optional)
3-4 Tablespoons Maple Syrup (I am a New Englander, but use what you love!)

Place all the ingredients in a food processor and grind until mixture begins to form a ball. The brownies should be able to form a ball in your hand but not be too wet and sticky. Place the mix on a hard surface and flatten out to roughly 1/2 inch high and shape into a square. Cut into triangles then place in the fridge to set. These Cosmic Brownies keep until fully enjoyed! Enjoy!!

KARMA CORNER: PROJECT AIR IN RWANDA

Project Air is a not-for-profit organization that implemented a unique program to help allay some of the trauma and mental health issues left in the wake of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Focusing on HIV+ women and their children, Project Air uses yoga to help genocide rape survivors manage the devastating effects of catastrophic sexual violence and HIV/AIDS. For the past two years, in collaboration with the medical NGO WE-ACTx, Project Air has reached thousands of HIV+ women and children, prompting the UN to endorse its work—the first time the UN has ever given formal endorsement to a yoga initiative.

"I had discovered, early in my researches, that their doctrine was no mere chemical fantasy, but a philosophy they applied to the world, to the elements, and to man himself. - W.B. Yeats, Rosa Alchemica

The essence of cinema is editing. It's the combination of what can be extraordinary images of people during emotional moments, or images in a general sense, put together in a kind of alchemy. -Francis Ford Coppola

When I was seven years old my sister gave me a Betty Crocker cookbook for kids. Its red and white checkered cover displayed a picture of a chocolate chip cookie. I was thrilled. My first creation was “pigs in a blanket” (hot dogs wrapped in bread) and my mother and sister thought I was an unusual seven year old.

Years later my favorite gift to friends and family was the ‘mixed tape:’ a collection of songs recorded onto a cassette tape. Though a now defunct art, I was passionate about creating these tapes; I took great care in selecting the songs and choosing their order to create an effect.

Even more years later, I lived at Esalen Institute in California and studied Gestalt therapy. Gestalt’s headline – the whole is greater than the sum of the parts – struck me in a profound way.

Now, 2010 – my kitchen experiments have more to do with raw chocolate and nothing to do with pigs (or blankets). My iTunes playlists have replaced the mixed tape; and in the midst of launching our website for our Radiantly Alive essential oils, I find that I’ve become obsessed with natural perfumery.

I ask myself why. Continue reading below....

June 2010 Level II Module - Recap
The June Level II module was two weeks - and the combination of sincerity and commitment from the students, the intensity and depth of education from our faculty (Dena Kingsberg, Edward Clark, Daniel Aaron and Punnu Wasu), the unique teaching methodology employed, produced an experience that powerfully enhanced the students' teaching and education, and was inspiring for us to be part of.

"Discipline, Devotion and Dedication", the featured theme, served as a platform from which we dove into practice teaching, adjusting, feedback sessions, philosophy, technique and more. See photos on our Facebook album.

NEW! To see video clips of student testimonials and learn more about the Level II Teacher Training experience, see our Podcast and Video page.

More information on the next module is below, or at our website. Contact Heather at ytt@radiantlyalive.com, to apply for a space.

Any three of the modules can be combined for 500 hour Certification, and each stands as a stand alone experience.

~ Introducing the theme for November Level II: Yoga as Art with Edward Clark, Ron Reid, Meenakshi, Dave Stringer, Daniel Aaron

Perhaps the greatest art project any of us create in our lives our life itself. When asked what message he would give to the world, Ghandi responded "my life is my message".

In The Tree Of Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar writes that “if as an artist you also practice yoga – if you are in touch with the internal levels of your being – you will develop a vast range of expression and your art will become what is known as ‘satyam, sivam, sundaram’, true, auspicious and beautiful. Art then becomes divine.”

In his brilliant essays in The Dance Of Siva, the philosopher Ananda K. Coomaraswamy makes the exciting claim that the experiencing of beauty is the same as that of religious experience – that “we are justified in identifying beauty with Brahman -–and that in this experience, the distinction between individual and Brahman is transcended.” If this is so, artists who study yoga as Mr. Iyengar suggests, will be making art that uses Beauty as a way for their public to actively engage with Brahman.

Join Edward, Ron, Meenakshi, Daniel and Dave in Bali this November as we explore Yoga as Art.

On Perfumery and Life
Perfumery is one of the most ancient arts. Alchemists, physicians, shamans and priests all engaged in the mixing of natural extracts for ritual or healing. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that synthetic fragrance was introduced and the modern business of chemical perfumes was created.

From the Latin “per fumus,” meaning “through smoke,” the etymology points to the innate desire in many of us to transform - to make the ordinary extraordinary. The mystery, magic, and promise of scent is that on wearing a particular fragrance, we become the one we wish to be, and perhaps attract the one with whom we wish to be.

The process of distilling a plant or flower takes time and care – it can be a difficult process. Expressing the power of perfumery in words can also be challenging. To me the combining of essential oils in an artful way is a perfect sensual analogy to the process of developing ourselves into our highest potential; it’s both a practice toward, and a symbol of, human evolution.

Just as Francis Ford Coppola created film into art, we all have the power to make our lives extraordinary. We are the stars of, directors of, and editors of our own movie. We cast the characters and set the scenes. We construct the plot with every choice we make.

One of the most important lessons I learned from culinary arts – which applies to perfumery, film and life – is the importance of source ingredients. Not only does the end product depend on what we start with – regardless of our alchemical abilities we’re unlikely to create something amazing from poor quality ingredients – beginning with the best materials leads to a great likelihood of a masterful final product.

I grew up thinking that perfume was one of the worst afflictions possible to encounter. They all smelled awful to me. Like many things in our modern world, the origin of the art was pure; the problem lied in the synthetic derivatives that devolved that art into something sullied.

The great news is that while the creation of synthetic fragrance buried the power and magic of the original art of perfumery, our knowledge and understanding of the natural alternatives available to us has revived this art form.

Each of us has the power and possibility to consider and refine what source materials we use towards the whole of our lives. Every element counts. The higher the quality and vibration of our surroundings, friends, food, activities, thoughts, etc, – the more in line the elements are with our values - the greater the chance of living our life as a masterpiece.

The paradoxical corollary is equally helpful and important: that no matter what we start with, we – as empowered alchemists capable of creating art from anything – can arrange the components however we wish; and in so doing, we create our lives into masterpieces.
