Radiantly Alive March 2009 Newsletter

“I am a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy.”  -J. D. Salinger

Danger – Happiness is contagious!

Just like yawns pass from person to person, so does happiness. People we are connected with, and even ones we’re not so connected with, influence us.

Here are a few highlights, and a couple references to research it further if you wish. The gist is that we become the people we spend time with. Yet here’s the yummy twist - new research reveals that happiness is more contagious than depression. I’ve now seen recent articles in The Washington Post and on Reuters - and the most thorough one in The New Scientist Magazine (Issue 2689).

Researchers differ in their ideas about how happiness spreads, though they seem largely certain now that it does. The stronger the relationship, and the more frequently we see people, the stronger their influence, yet even people we don’t know can influence our happiness levels.

One particularly strong theory is that the phenomenon is connected to our inherent tendency to mimic others’ facial expressions and body language. The research of Paul Ekman shows that facial expressions both reveal and affect emotions, and now their effect on social networks multiplies the importance of what we’re doing with our bodies and faces.

Below are 5 tips for how to take best advantage of this new (and familiar) information about how the emotions of the people around us affect us. And as we grock these lessons, let’s upgrade it – let us be the ones who are increasing the happiness of those around us. Smile on!

In love and service,

VIbrant Living Yoga Teacher Trainings - May/June and Oct/Nov
rice terrace.jpegThe greatest thing you can ever offer anyone is the person you've become. If you want the world to give you value and wealth, then you must become a valuable person. Your most valuable asset is your own personal development. Make yourself competent, attractive, committed, disciplined, skilled. Become the person you need to be in order to have the life you want. Invest in your future by investing in yourself." -- Ralph Marston.

By choosing freedom over fear, remembering what's most important in these uncertain times, we invest in ourselves and create the life we choose.

Six weeks left to go before our month-long immersion into yoga, raw food and transformation here in Bali. Spaces are still available for the May/June event, and we're also accepting applications for the Oct/Nov training. To get a feel for what we're creating, see our informational video on our site. Also, check out video clips from our amazing faculty on our new podcast and video page (more on this below). To register, or for more information, contact us at ytt@radiantlyalive.com.

5 Tips for Increasing your Happiness
1. Choose your friends carefully. Everything and everyone we surround ourselves with influences us. In fact we are always choosing, even if by default, and doing so intentionally increases the likelihood of creating the life we want.

2. Choose which of your existing friends you spend the most time with. For example, hang out with people who are upbeat, or avoid couch potatoes. This wisdom comes to us from every spiritual tradition in one way or another. The more we are with people that uplift us, the more grow into our potential. And, conversely, at other times we can be uplifting those around us.

3. Join a club whose members you would like to emulate (Yoga nuts, raw food potluckers, an optimist club), and socialize with them. Simply by being with like-minded people (sangha in Buddhist terms) we have more power to reach our goals.

4. If you are with people whose emotional state or behaviors you could do without, try to avoid the natural inclination to mimic their facial expressions and postures. Notice – with awareness and compassion – behaviors and attitudes that are different from what you wish to cultivate, and then consciously choose what you create for yourself.

5. Be aware at all times of your susceptibility to social influence
- and remember that being a social animal is mostly beneficial. Spending time with other people (and other species) reminds us that we are all connected, that at the root we are all the same. Good times, laughter, joy – all multiply in groups of friends.
